Beyond The Box by Carlos Lorenzana

Beyond the box” is an abstract interpretation of anxieties and fears I have experienced during these times and the energies I have come across from the strangers that I come across in the world. The dark color pallet represents the current overwhelming negative emotions and uncertainties that both humanity and as individuals, are currently witnessing and experiencing. Using lines to create both the box and the individual brings a sense of movement from inside to outside the box. The individual finds himself inside the box yet at the same time part of himself spills outside the box. The feeling of being trapped in a box is based on a human emotion that yearns to escape confinement. It is up to us as individuals to allow ourselves to continue feeling this way or to evolve into a better version of ourselves. For humanity to change as a whole, it is up to us to change as individuals and set an example for others. The bright color pallet represents the positive aspect of the individual and what we can become from this. In dark times we have the choice to be grateful for what we still have and what we can become. Isolation has not taken love, hope, desire, and dreams away from us. It has presented us with opportunities through hardship to make the world a better place for future generations. It is a time of self-reflection, personal growth, family unity, and adapting to new ways to stay in touch with our loved ones. Communities are adapting and will grow stronger. The soul refuses to stay confined in a box built by fears, anxiety, and uncertainty. We are in a rebuilding face of the human spirit for the future of the planet and generations to come. What we as individuals take from this time will develop our future. Every individual will produce their interpretation of this painting. I aspire to make a positive connection and remind the audience that there is still hope, love, and the opportunity to make dreams come true. By taking a step back and reflect on all the damage humanity has done to itself and the planet we can change how we treat others and the planet. Let us take this rebirth of the human spirit to build a better future.

Artist statement
Keeping nature’s existence close in mind, Carlos Lorenzana aspires to create abstract art which reflects the interdependence amongst all surrounding. Everything cannot exist on its own. The art explores a theme relating to Buddhist Principal, “form is void”- meaning that forms are inseparable from their content. The form of shapes and figures Lorenzana takes on in his paintings are also the forms of their backgrounds. He applies this philosophical motif through a colorful acrylic palette and a dense layered texture display. It is in the minute details that one can see the correlation between what unifies form and all surrounding.
