Inner Demons by Jonathan Dean

This is a large collage (on A1 paper) using leftover scraps of recycled paintings, some from a collage portrait series – these latter suggested disembodied faces. The resulting figures have at once a comic and sinister effect, reminding me of representations of demons in some medieval paintings and sculptures. To me these are like the inner voices we can hear taunting us at times (e.g. during lockdown): playground bullies who somehow manage to get us to take them (too) seriously…

Artist statement
I work across different types of painting medium, but since the first lockdown began have been increasingly drawn towards collage, and to recycling discarded paintings into new works – a concept I first came across in the Lee Krasner Barbican exhibition a few years ago. This approach ‘jolts’ my imagination into new ways of conceiving textural, colouristic and gestural contrasts and composition.
